A largely self-taught artist practicing since 1980, Fowokan explores the spiritual and mental conflicts between African and European cultures through his sculptural works, which draw from pre-colonial African and ancient Egyptian traditions. He is also a jeweller, essayist, poet, and musician, having been a member of the funk group Cymande in the early 1970s.
