She served as the Mayor of Southland District from 1992 until her retirement in 2013, making her the longest-serving female mayor in New Zealand's history. She began her career in local government by serving on the Te Anau Community Board and later as a councillor. Cardno was recognized for her public service with multiple honors, including the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. She passed away on April 23, 2015.
