Frances Ames was a South African neurologist and psychiatrist, renowned for her human rights activism, especially in the medical ethics investigation following the death of activist Steve Biko. She led a legal battle to hold medical professionals accountable for neglect, winning a landmark case in 1985. The first woman to earn a medical doctorate from the University of Cape Town in 1964, Ames advocated for the medical use of cannabis after observing its benefits. Honored by Nelson Mandela in 1999, Ames continued her advocacy until her retirement and was active in post-apartheid truth commissions.
