He was instrumental in founding the Marathon Catalunya Commission and the Catalonia Orienteering Club. Mates initiated the Cursa de l'Amistat in 1981, a notable long-distance race in Barcelona. He received several accolades posthumously, including honors for his contributions to sports in Catalonia.
