Francesc Pararols i Mercader was a prominent Spanish politician and fighter for democracy and freedoms during the Second Republic. He led the PSUC in Girona's first democratic elections and contributed to establishing the city's first left-wing government. At seventeen, he joined the PSUC while fighting for the Republicans in Lleida. In 1938, he went to the USSR to finish military aviation studies and served in the Soviet army against the Nazi invasion in Belarus. He returned to Girona in 1956, living under regime surveillance until the dictatorship ended.
