Francesco Schettino, born on November 14, 1960, is a former Italian captain known for his role in the Costa Concordia disaster, where the cruise ship struck a reef and capsized near Giglio Island, Italy, on January 13, 2012. The incident resulted in the deaths of 33 people, including 27 passengers and 5 crew members, with one additional passenger injured. In 2015, he was sentenced to six years in prison for his role in the incident, beginning his sentence in 2017 after exhausting all legal remedies.
