Francis Melwin Rogallo was an American aerospace engineer and inventor, known for developing the flexible wing design during the 1940s. In the 1960s and 1970s, he refined this design at NASA for potential use in lunar landings. Although parachutes were chosen instead, his innovations laid the groundwork for modern hang gliding. By 2003, Rogallo had introduced new designs for gliding. He spent his later years in Southern Shores, North Carolina, close to Kitty Hawk, the birthplace of modern aviation.
