Francisco Maria Cavalcanti Oliveira, known as Chico de Oliveira, was a Brazilian sociologist born on November 7, 1933, in Recife and passed away on July 10, 2019, in São Paulo. He was a founding member of the Workers' Party but left in 2003 to join PSOL. Oliveira earned his degree in Social Sciences from the University of Recife in 1956 and worked with Celso Furtado at the Northeastern Bank and SUDENE. He was imprisoned for two months after the 1964 coup but later became a retired professor of sociology at the University of São Paulo. He won the Jabuti Prize in 2004 for his work.
