François Fontan was a French Occitan nationalist born in Paris in 1929 and died in Cuneo in 1979. A self-taught scholar, he studied languages in Paris and politics in Toulouse. Coming from a royalist family, he initially joined the Trotskyist group 'Socialisme et Barbarie' before moving to Nice, where he became involved with the PCF and the Unified Socialist Party. Reflecting on the decolonization processes, he founded the Occitan Nationalist Party in 1959. He faced persecution due to accusations of homosexuality and support for the Algerian National Liberation Front, eventually settling in the Occitan valleys.
