Frank Brian Mercer OBE was a British chemical engineer, entrepreneur, and inventor, born in Blackburn on December 22, 1927. He developed the Netlon Process for producing plastic nets in the 1950s, earning the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement. In 1959, he founded Netlon Ltd for commercialization. In the late 1970s, he invented geogrids and established Tensar in 1983. A recognized figure in his field, he was awarded OBE in 1981 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1984. Mercer also established the Brian Mercer Award for Feasibility at the Royal Society.
