Active in the National Union of Mineworkers, he became a close ally of Arthur Scargill and rose to significant roles, including Vice President and Agent for the Yorkshire Area. A committed socialist, he supported Fidel Castro and was involved in political activities, such as the Socialist Labour Party, where he served as President until his death in 2002. Cave played a vital role during the 1984/5 miners' strike and participated in aid efforts to Cuba.
