He studied at the University of London, earning his Bachelor's degree in 1950 and a Ph.D. in 1953. Stacey had a significant academic career, including positions at the University of Queensland and CSIRO Exploration and Mining. He expanded on Louis Néel's work in the 1950s, introducing the concept of pseudo-single-domain behavior of magnetic materials and developing an equation of state for high pressures applicable to the Earth's mantle and core.
