He became one of the early members of the Signals Intelligence Service in 1930, focusing on developing encryption techniques for the U.S. Army. Rowlett was instrumental in deciphering Japanese encrypted messages and helped create the SIGABA machine for encrypting military communications during World War II. After the war, he served as the head of cryptanalysis at the NSA, contributing significantly to the field of cryptography until his death on June 29, 1998.
