Franklin Chang-Díaz is a Costa Rican-American astronaut who has the record for the most spaceflights, totaling seven, alongside astronaut Jerry L. Ross. After leaving NASA in 2005, he founded a private company called Ad Astra, which focuses on the development of advanced plasma rocket propulsion technology. Years of research resulted in the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR), a powerful electric propulsion device that theoretically could transport a crewed spacecraft to Mars in just 39 days.
