He initially worked as a factory manager before starting his singing career in the 1930s under the name Ted Jenkins, performing French chansons and cowboy songs. He gained fame with the song 'Ketelbinkie' and thereafter focused on sea shanties. Van Schaik was featured in Dutch films and was active in revues and operettas. He also worked as a record promoter and is remembered for his contribution to music about Rotterdam's street children, continuing to influence Dutch music until his death on January 4, 1990.
