František Janča was a Czech aircraft designer and test pilot born on February 6, 1905, in Uherský Ostroh. He worked for Letov and Avia, situated in Letňany, Prague. After World War II, he led a project to complete two Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 helicopters originally designed by Germans. In December 1947, he underwent pilot training in Sweden, becoming the first Czechoslovak helicopter pilot. His career ended tragically on May 16, 1952, when he died in a test flight accident involving the prototype Czechoslovak helicopter Praga XE-II-F.
