Franz Alfred Theophil Winter, known by his artist name Fathwinter, was a German Informel artist born on May 23, 1906, in Mainz and died on June 27, 1974, in Düsseldorf. He studied art at the State School of Art and Handicraft in Mainz and attended evening classes at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in 1929/30. During the Nazi regime, he faced an exhibition ban. His evacuation to Murnau in 1942 led to an important connection with Gabriele Münter and influenced by Wassily Kandinsky's work. He became associated with the artist group Der Rote Reiter in 1946 and worked under the name Fathwinter from 1949.
