Franz Josef Himpsel, born on October 30, 1949, in Rosenheim, is a German physicist known for his contributions to surface physics and nanostructures. He received his physics diploma in 1973 from Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, where he later earned his doctorate in 1976 with research on photoemission from alkali halide single crystals. Himpsel worked at CERN and then joined the Thomas J. Watson Research Center, becoming head of the Surface Physics Department by 1985. He has been a professor at the University of Wisconsin since 1995, holding the title of Ednor M. Rowe Professor of Physics since 2000.
