Frederic M. Dutton, commonly known as Fred Dutton, is an American jazz musician born on April 26, 1928, in San José, California. He is known for his work with the bass, bassoon, and contrabassoon. Dutton studied music from 1947 to 1955 and was a member of Dave Brubeck's first quartet in 1951. He participated in recordings with Brubeck and was part of the Chamber Jazz Sextet from 1956 to 1958. In 1958, he played with the Joe Castro Trio and performed in Europe alongside notable musicians like Bent Jädig, Romano Mussolini, and Hans Koller.
