He was instrumental in the Canadian aircraft industry, especially during and after World War II. Smye served as the president of Avro Aircraft Limited and was involved in significant projects such as the Jetliner and the CF-100. After the cancellation of the Arrow project, he left Avro in 1960 and later became president of Canadian Ofrex Limited. He moved to the Algarve, Portugal, in 1973 and passed away in December 1985.
