After studying at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, he joined the Swedish Aviation Authority and later led Saab's calculation department. He retrieved secret aircraft designs from Switzerland post-World War II, influencing Saab's projects. Wänström received the Thulin Medal in silver and gold for his contributions and was involved in various prominent Saab aircraft developments.
