Gary Richard Thompson, born on December 11, 1937, in Los Angeles, is an American literary scholar known for his work on Edgar Allan Poe. He earned his B.A. in 1959, M.A. in 1960, and Ph.D. in 1967. He taught English literature at various institutions, including Ohio State University, UCLA, Washington State University, and Purdue University, where he is now Professor Emeritus. In 1968, he founded the journal Poe Studies, which honored him with a festschrift in 2006.
