She represented Bulgaria in international competitions and was part of the team that placed eighth in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the 1983 World Championships alongside Svobodka Damyanova, Rositsa Stamenova, and Katya Ilieva. Penkova achieved her personal best time of 51.66 seconds in July 1983 during a competition in Sofia.
