Gao Xingjian is the first Chinese recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, born on January 4, 1940, in Jiangxi Province, East China. He studied in state schools and obtained a university degree with a major in French in Beijing. He began a literary career and chose a life of exile in 1987 by moving to Paris, where he completed the celebrated novel 'Soul Mountain,' translated by Mabel Lee. In 1992, he received the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government, and he is also known as a screenwriter, painter, fiction writer, and critic.
