Gaylene Ann Sciascia is a prominent New Zealand choreographer and dance educator, born on September 3, 1948, in Auckland. She founded New Zealand's first contemporary dance company, New Dance, in 1972, paving the way for modern dance in the country. Sciascia organized the inaugural National Dance Congress in 1976 and has significantly contributed to dance education, notably at Whitireia Performing Arts, which she established in 1991. In recognition of her contributions to dance, she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2017.
