Geir Ivarsøy was the chief programmer at Opera Software. Along with Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, he was part of a research group at a Norwegian telecommunications company, where they developed a web browser called MultiTorg Opera. After the project was abandoned by Telenor, they acquired the rights in 1995 and founded their own company to continue development. The browser, now known as Opera, gained significant popularity despite competition. Opera Software grew to over 500 employees after relocating to Oslo. Ivarsøy passed away in March 2006 after a long battle with cancer.
