Gelu Ionescu, born Gheorghe Ionescu on June 8, 1937, in Galați, Romania, is a Romanian literary critic, literary historian, essayist, film chronicler, and memoirist. He has lived in Germany since 1983. After graduating from the Romanian Language and Literature Faculty of the University of Bucharest in 1963, he taught at the same university for 19 years. He emigrated to France in 1982 and worked as a journalist for Radio Europa Liberă in Munich until 1995, later resuming teaching at Heidelberg University.
