Gene Arthur Budig was an influential American baseball executive and academic leader, notably serving as the last president of the American League from 1994 to 1999. His presidency ended shortly before Major League Baseball abolished the separate presidencies of the American and National Leagues. Beyond baseball, Budig held esteemed positions in academia, including chancellor at the University of Kansas and president at both Illinois State University and West Virginia University. He later became part-owner of a minor league baseball team, continuing his involvement in the sport until his passing in 2020.
