Eugene Francis 'Gene' Kranz (b. August 17, 1933) is a retired American aerospace engineer and NASA's second head flight director, who oversaw missions for the Gemini and Apollo programs, including the first moon landing with Apollo 11. He led the successful efforts of the mission control team to rescue the crew of Apollo 13 and has been portrayed by actor Ed Harris in a film of the same name. Known for his flat-top hairstyle and distinctive mission vests made by his wife, Kranz also coined the phrase 'tough and competent', known as the 'Kranz Dictum'.
