Geneva Smitherman is a prominent American educator and linguist known for her contributions to African American studies. She is a University Distinguished Professor Emerita of English at Michigan State University and co-founder of the African American and African Studies doctoral program. Additionally, Smitherman established the Malcolm X Academy, the first public African-centered elementary school in the United States. She is affectionately referred to as 'Dr. G' and 'Dr. Smitherman'.
