Initially registering for national service, he became an anarchist and a vocal activist, facing imprisonment for his beliefs. Mullen wrote articles against conscription and ran for office as an independent candidate. He served time in prison, during which he completed a degree. After his release, he worked as a programmer and continued to advocate through writing until his passing.
