After returning to academia, he contributed significantly to Japanese studies in the UK, founding departments at Oxford and Sheffield. Bownas was also involved in business research and authored key works, including a bestselling anthology of Japanese poetry. He received notable accolades, including the Order of the Sacred Treasure from Japan and CBE from the UK. He passed away from pneumonia at the age of 88.
