He is recognized for discovering the barley abrasion process during his research at the university. In 1998, he received the American Society of Brewing Chemists Award of Distinction for his contributions to brewing science, often regarded as the 'Nobel prize of brewing.' Palmer made history as the first black professor in Scotland and was knighted in the 2014 New Year Honours.
