Born in Sussex, England, he studied electrical engineering at the University of Southampton and joined the BBC in 1949. He became a leader in lens and test card transparency specifications. Test Card F was notable for its focus on skin tone accuracy and featured a photograph of Hersee's daughter, Carole. Hersee published a monograph on television test cards in 1967 and left the BBC in 1979. He passed away in 2001.
