He earned his Ph.D. in botany from Harvard University in 1931 and worked at UC Berkeley on the genetic evolution of plant species. Stebbins authored several influential books, including 'Variation and Evolution in Plants', which combined genetics and Darwin's theory of natural selection. He played a significant role in establishing the genetics department at UC Davis and was active in promoting evolution and science since the 1960s.
