Makinson worked as an entomologist before joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, where he notably served in western Canada and the Arctic. He represented Port de Grave in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1949-1951 and was an advocate for confederation with Canada. After retiring from the RCMP, he managed a family dairy farm and other agricultural ventures.
