George O. Abell (March 1, 1927 – October 7, 1983) was an astronomer at the University of California, Los Angeles. He earned his B.S. (1951), M.S. (1952), and Ph.D. (1957) from the California Institute of Technology. Abell is best known for compiling the Abell catalog of rich clusters of galaxies for his Ph.D. thesis, using data from the Palomar Sky Survey. He also discovered how the brightness of celestial bodies could serve as a distance scale. His contributions include a list of planetary nebulae and the periodic comet 52P/Harrington-Abell.
