George Shirley Switzer (June 11, 1915 – March 23, 2008) was an influential American mineralogist best known for establishing the Smithsonian Institution's National Gem and Mineral Collection. His most notable achievement was acquiring the Hope Diamond for the museum in 1958, following a donation by jeweler Harry Winston. Switzer also conducted significant analyses of Moon rocks returned by NASA missions. Under his contributions, the collection expanded to over 15,000 gems, 350,000 minerals, and 35,000 meteorites, making it one of the world's most extensive collections of gems, minerals, and natural specimens.
