Gerald M. Reaven (1928-2018) was a prominent American endocrinologist known for his research on insulin resistance and diabetes. A professor emeritus at Stanford University, his groundbreaking 1988 Banting Lecture proposed that central obesity, diabetes, and hypertension share a common cause in insulin resistance, leading to the concept of metabolic syndrome. Reaven held degrees from the University of Chicago and completed his residency at the University of Michigan. Apart from academia, he served as Senior Vice President for Research at Shaman Pharmaceuticals and authored works on Syndrome X and its implications for cardiovascular health.
