Orphaned during the Holocaust, he learned to play the clarinet with the Red Army and performed in military bands after World War II. Later, he played at weddings and collected Jewish songs largely unknown to Eastern Europeans. He immigrated to the USA in 1994, performing as a clarinetist and conducting music courses. His last album, 'A Living Tradition,' was recorded at the 21st KlezKamp. Goldenshteyn passed away from a heart attack while fishing on Long Island on June 10, 2006.
