Gerson van Messel was a Dutch aviator born on May 31, 1902, in Harlingen and died on January 24, 2000, in Bussum. He served in the Royal Netherlands Army before starting his aviation career in 1924. Van Messel worked for KLM and KNILM and flew for American forces during World War II. After the war, he helped establish intercontinental flights with Asia and the Middle East for KLM, retiring from flying in 1956. Later, he managed quality assurance at KLM and became the deputy director of the Netherlands Institute for Industry and Technology.
