Gilbert McLean Hayton was a New Zealand fighter pilot and flying ace in the RAF during World War II, credited with the destruction of at least five enemy aircraft. Born on 12 May 1917 in Hāwera, he joined the RAF in 1939, serving initially with Fairey Battle units before flying Spitfires with No. 266 and No. 66 Squadrons. He participated in night fighting duties in The Blitz and achieved aerial victories while stationed in Malta. Hayton died at sea on 20 October 1942, after his ship was torpedoed.
