Gilles Andriamahazo was a Malagasy military leader and the president of Madagascar from February 12 to June 15, 1975. Born on May 5, 1919, in Tôlanaro, he served in the French Army during World War II and the Algerian War. After Madagascar gained independence in 1960, he joined the new Malagasy military and rose to the rank of brigadier general. He became the military governor of Antananarivu amid anti-government protests in 1972, and after the assassination of President Richard Ratsimandrava, he declared martial law and led the military directory until handing power to Didier Ratsiraka in June 1975.
