Bernier was appointed as Canada's ambassador to Haiti from 1997 to 2001 and was elected as a member of the Canadian House of Commons for the Beauce electoral district from November 5, 1984, to June 2, 1997, during which he was part of the Progressive Conservative parliamentary group.
