He is recognized for shooting down 17 fighter jets, all Egyptian, which makes him the pilot with the most confirmed aerial victories in the Arab-Israeli conflicts. He served as an active pilot from 1963 until his retirement in 1998. Epstein holds the title 'ace of aces' for fighter vs. fighter engagements, just short of the world record of 21 held by Nikolay Sutyagin.
