Giovanni D'Alfonso was an Italian carabiniere born on February 7, 1930, in Penne. He was critically injured during a shootout on June 5, 1975, while attempting to rescue industrialist Vittorio Vallarino Gancia from kidnappers. D'Alfonso died in hospital shortly after the confrontation. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Medal for Military Valor on April 28, 1976, and recognized as a victim of terrorism. A carabinieri station in San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore is named in his honor.
