Giovanni Torrisi was an Italian admiral born on November 8, 1917, in Catania. He served in the Italian Royal Navy starting in 1940 and fought during World War II. After the war, he commanded a frigate and the cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi, and held various staff positions for 11 years. Torrisi was implicated in an attempted coup in 1970, revealed only after his death. He commanded the Italian Navy from August 1, 1977, to January 31, 1980, and then became Chief of Defense until September 2, 1981. He passed away on August 11, 1992.
