Gleb Sergeevich Medvedev was a prominent Russian entomologist born on January 21, 1931, in Askania-Nova. He studied biology at Kharkov University and later at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, where he became head of the Insect Systematics Laboratory in 1965. Medvedev authored over 200 publications focusing on the taxonomy, phylogeny, biodiversity, and zoogeography of darkling beetles and was known for his expertise in dung beetles, describing more than 250 new species and having numerous beetles named in his honor.
