Hani Gorō was a prominent Japanese historian born on March 29, 1901, in Kiryū, Gunma Prefecture, and he died on June 8, 1983, in Tokyo. He became the first in Japan to develop a Marxist historical theory based on historical materialism. His notable works include studies on the Meiji Restoration and a range of articles emphasizing the role of the peasantry and bourgeoisie in historical transformations. After World War II, he became a social activist and was elected to the Japanese House of Representatives in 1947. His son is the film director Susumu Hani.
