He held the position of Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development from 2005 to 2015 under his brother, Mahinda Rajapaksa. Notably, he played a significant role in the military defeat of the Tamil Tigers, effectively ending the Sri Lankan Civil War. Rajapaksa is known for his nationalist policies and emphasis on economic development, making him the first president from a military background and without prior elected office.
